Elder Every™ Discussion:
Elder is a plant that has unique and special capabilities, especially for support with broken bones and viruses. The testimony of Dr. Stephen Buhner blows any false information directly out of the water. He has shared that he used a tincture of the aerial parts of Elder to treat his life partner when she was recovering from bone microfractures. Miraculously, he claimed that she recovered in only one week’s time. Elderberry’s many parts have their own benefits and when used together, contains a powerful synergy.
Dr. Buhner features twelve plants in his book Herbal AntiVirals, in which elder has more studies and information than any other herb mentioned, by far. As a matter of fact, it is one of twelve featured plants. With all of the fear mongering online, this man made it his life’s work to tell the truth about medicinal plants. Elder contains RIP’s (ribosome-inactivating proteins), which are how they protect themselves from viruses. The compounds in elderberry have synergistic actions. For example, while one compound may inhibit infusion, while another acts as a virucidal, and at the same time another may stimulate specific immune responses. (2) This is a prime example of why it may be best to use plants in their whole forms.
Elderberry reductions, also known as syrup, is highly sought out, especially one like this that includes the flower. As far as we can tell, we are the only company that offers a reduction that includes all of the parts of Elder, including its roots! We are able to do this due to our own wild-grown patch of Elderberry that supplies us with just enough aerial parts to supply our customers!
It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for ages. Commonly, throughout the world, the berry and leaf as a warm bitter, to support the dispelling of blood stasis, dispelling wind, epilepsy, dropsy, hepatitis, liver injury, inflammations, induce sweating, as a diuretic, bruising, rheumatism, dislocations, nephritis, edema, beriberi, and urticaria. The berries were also traditionally used to make wine with. (2) The leaf and root were used to treat pain, numbness, bone diseases, rheumatic issues. The leaves contain nervine compounds were used for uncontrollable movements, pain, fevers that fluctuated from hot to cold, numbness, bone disease, reducing swelling, especially of the liver and kidneys. (2) The twigs also have a place in ancient medicine, especially to support blood purifying, wounds, infection prevention, skin inflammation, jaundice, pain, headaches, measles, diphtheria, and mumps.
Elderberry compounds may block viruses from entering and attaching to healthy cells. (1) It may support the body from viral replication, even after the virus has become active. (1) No matter what stage, elderberry is said to stimulate a cytokines release. Cytokines are substances, secreted by cells, that act as messages to the immune system. They are the root of inflammation and why it may be occurring. They are used to manipulate the immune system so that the pathogen may continue to feed, ultimately trying to get our own immune system to break down our own tissues, as they sit back and lazily feed. Some claim that the cytokine process may be the key to overcoming illnesses all by itself. Supporting the body, while reversing and lowering the cytokine cascades are crucial to getting well. The leaves are the parts used in other countries, in attempts to reduce swelling of the liver and kidneys.
Buhner made a social media post that tells us that people in SE Asia used elder tinctures for osteoporosis support. Elder has been used for centuries with intentions to enhance immunity. Its most popular use is as a cold remedy and for treating viral infections, like strains of Herpes and Shingles. They contain aromatic compounds, which we continuously mention, are unique, rare, and support for the respiratory system. Dr. Buhner suggests that we all add the aerial parts of Elder to our toolboxes as a primary approach in the treatment for osteoporosis and broken bones.
Elder contains compounds known as modulators, which are tiny switches in the body that are capable of flipping like tiny control switches that when used in the right ways can regulate pathways. The most well-known modulators are those that manipulate cytokines and immunity. Elder’s modulators specialize in osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Diseases from osteoblast/osteoclast imbalance include osteoporosis (too much resorption/not enough formation), Paget’s disease (unorganized, often excess osteoclasts), and osteoporosis (too much bone due to osteoclasts). Rheumatoid arthritis and bone tumors may involve overactive osteoclasts, causing bone loss. Osteogenesis imperfecta involves faulty osteoblasts that may lead to weak bones.
Elderberry is one of the most used additives used in cold/flu, and cough syrups and it has a sweet, medicinal flavor. Its berry contains highly medicinal compounds known for instigating sweating while sleeping, as well as fight off fevers. It may offer compounds to fight cold and viral infections, such as vitamin C, vitamin A, bioflavonoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, beta-carotene, iron, limonene, antioxidants, potassium, and phytosterols. It may also help you to sleep, especially in times of sickness, to amplify the healing ability of the body itself.
It also contains herbs that may help to soothe a dry throat. Echinacea angustifolia and spilanthes have numbing properties, making them popular remedies that can numb the throat tissues. We also include adaptogens that bind to compounds and carry them deeper than they normally may be able to reach. Lastly, the concoction is topped off with a splash of fresh squeezed pokeberry juice, which has anti-viral and other benefits, in which we could write a book about on its own. Remember, pokeberry is one of the most invasive plants on this planet, meaning it may be here for a reason, especially in times with viral infections seeming to be rampant.
