Planting/Growing Discussion:

This is an herb suggested by Dr. Stephen Buhner, as it is mentioned in many of his books.
Motherwort, Leonurus cardiaca, meaning “Lionhearted”, is a rather peculiar looking plant. Caution must be used, as it has many thorns. It has pink to purple clusters of flowers, blooming from the middle of summer through fall. Its leaves stand out, as they grow on the upper portions of the stems. It also attracts many insects and butterflies. It is thought to have originated in Asia, then spreading to western countries. They are easy to grow. While watering them frequently to germinate the seeds, once they are planted outside, they require little care.
It is a perennial that produces many seeds. It may be easily grown by seed, transplanting, or by dividing its roots. It grows best in zones 3-8. It prefers part shade to full sun. It likes plenty of water. It can grow in any lighting, from full sun, to full shade. It also grows well in most soil types. A pH of 7.7 is ideal. It can grow up to 4 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide.
Seeds need to be stratified for one week or they can be sown in the fall. To stratify them, soak them in water for up to 24 hours, then placing them in soil, in the fridge for 10 days. They can be pressed 1/8th inch into the soil and take approximately 7 days to germinate. They should be spaced 2-3 ft. apart.
Place the seeds on the surface of the soil and gently pat it down. Plants will germinate within 3 weeks. They should be transplanted 2 ft. apart. If starting by divided roots, bury the root section and water it well. It can be harvested in 60 days.
Motherwort is an aggressive grower and to prevent self-seeding, cut the tips of the flower stalks back by 5 inches after it flowers, but before seeds begin to mature. Flowers will begin to bloom in midsummer. This is also said to be the best time to harvest it for its medicinal value. They may also be planted in pots or beds with root boarders.
We carry Motherwort tinctures, colloidal tinctures, glycerites, herbal tea, loose powder, and capsules, elsewhere on this site. To purchase one, or to read about the possible benefits of Motherwort, Click Here.
